Venus and Serena Williams

On January 31, 2009, tennis phenom Serena Williams defeated Dinara Safina in the Australian Open, bumping Williams back up to the No. 1 position in the women's world tennis rankings. This was Serena’s fourth Australian Open championship title and the 10th major tournament win for Williams, who also won the U.S. Open title in September of 2008.

Williams is only the seventh woman in tennis history with double-digit Grand Slam singles titles. With this win, she also broke the records of former champions Monica Seles and Maureen Connolly, who each won nine major titles.

Born Serena Jameka Williams on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan, Serena was raised in the turbulent Los Angeles neighborhood of Compton. Her father, Richard Williams, dreamed that his daughters would have a better life as professional tennis players and encouraged his daughters to strive for their best which turned into Olympic gold medals and world tennis titles.

Serena's first major achievement was capturing the US Open singles title in 1999 (becoming the first African-American woman since Althea Gibson in 1958 to win the title). She partnered with her sister to gain doubles titles in the US Open and French Open in 1999, Wimbledon in 2000 and 2002, and the Australian Open in 2001 and 2003. Further successes include singles titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in 2002, and the Wimbledon and Australian Open in 2003.

In 2002 and 2003, the Williams sisters faced off in four consecutive Grand Slam finals, the only siblings in the history of the sport to do so; Serena defeated Venus each time. The sisters also share an Olympic gold medal in women's doubles which they received in 2000.

Known for her flamboyant fashion choices on the court, Serena Williams has launched her own line for Puma and Nike, as well as a designer clothing line called Aneres.

The older of the Williams sisters, Venus Ebone Starr Williams was born on June 17, 1980 in Lynwood, California. In 2002, Venus became the first African American, male or female, to rise to the No. 1 ranking in tennis.

Coached by her father, she rose to stardom in 2000 when she became the dominant female player of the year with her singles title wins in Wimbledon and the US Open, and an Olympic gold in Sydney. That year, she also won the Wimbledon doubles title with her sister. In 2001, she retained the Wimbledon and the US Open singles titles, but in 2003 was defeated by her sister in the Wimbledon singles final.

After a less successful 2004, at the start of 2005 Venus was seeded ninth but came back to form to win the Wimbledon singles title for a third time. It was the longest Wimbledon final in history and Venus was the lowest ranked player to win the women's singles title ever. During the 2006 season, Williams was plagued by injuries and failed to win any significant matches.

Posted on April 28, 2011, by Kelli DeMario.

Rumors are circulating that former World No. 1 Venus Williams has pulled out of both Madrid and Rome, having not yet recovered from an abdominal strain that has kept her off the court for months.

The tennis star has not played a match since January, when she retired during the early rounds at the Australian Open.

Venus Williams is in the news again. Whether for amazing tennis or skimpy outfits, the tennis star is in the buzz for one thing or the other.

Venus's obsession with short dresses is not a secret, and she is not shy about making it clear that she doesn't mind flaunting her body once in a while. What has caught the eyes of some and popped the eyeballs of many is the skin-colored underwear that she wears with near-nonexistent hemlines.

If you think she is butt-naked here, you are seriously mistaken. She is wearing underwear, but is it fulfilling the purpose? The question is being asked by many followers: Is Venus doing it deliberately? Isn't she too big a star to employ such petty tactics to invite attention?

Anyway, the good part is that her butt looks awesome and the pictures are a treat to see! I thoroughly enjoyed them, and you should too. If she wants to be seen, who can stop her? Even if I had the power, I wouldn't.

Her perseverance gave Venus Williams the chance to become the first woman to reach the semifinals on Tuesday. The scheduled day match up against Schiavone was moved in the early evening after a stunning 56-set race between Sam Querrey and Stanislas Wawrinka, which followed that at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The match between third-seed Williams and sixth-seed Schiavone started around 6:00 p.m. and the lights covering the stadium are already switched on.

According to Williams, she got so much experience anticipating at Wimbledon even if it’s raining and still won the games, who won the Wimbledon singles title five times.

Venus Williams has overpowered some of the best players of her era, which is something highlighted by the attendance of tennis superstar Martina Hingis at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday. However, the lightweight yet energetic Schiavone has likewise endured.

In 2002, both players first played each other and up to this moment, the Italian tennis player has more unforgettable season by winning her first Grand Slam singles championship at the French Open.

Still, even in the best as well as most stunning year of her career, she has not yet resolve on how to defeat Williams. Schiavone is 0-8 against Williams, and although she displayed several powerful and classic tennis against the unpredictable Venus Williams, she never won even a single set.

Williams completed the match in 1 hour and 54 minutes to return to the U.S. Open semifinals for her seventh appearance here. She will be facing the winner of the second quarterfinal match between U.S. Open defending champion Kim Clijsters against Samantha Stosur.

In 2009, the defending champion outplayed Williams in the finals that frustrated Williams and return to the tournament and won in 2000 and 2001.

I’m not sure if I can take another reality show on TV! Jeez WILLIAMS SISTERS REALITY SHOW? Its gettin’ a bit ridiculous! So we hear that tennis super stars, Venus and Serena Williams have announced that they plan on starring in their very own reality show. The girls say they are in the middle of filming a reality show pilot based on their private lives. Why would they want to XPOSE that? Press asked Serena and Venus what could we expect on the show, and they said “Everything! You’ll see how we argue and make-up…and yes, you’ll see all the juicy details of our love lives”. Venus was quick to respond to that. “Her love life. I’m still trying to find Mr. Right…maybe this will help improve my luck”, Venus said. We even hear that one episode will show Serena hooking her sister up on a blind date with a popular rapper! LOL! The reality show pilot should be done by Spring 2009. Thereafter, they will shop it around to different networks. I’m sure they will have no issues with it getting picked up!
